Ajrakh printing is an age old indigo dyed block printing technique, which has about 26 steps to achieve the perfectly two side printed fabric. The tradionally produced fabric is mostly consumed locally by specific communities. The fabric printed for Fabindia Pvt. Ltd. is striped down to 8-9 steps to acheive a one side printed cloth used for garments and home furnishings.
The were 6 colours at play : indigo, resisted base, red, green, grey and iron.
During the project we attempted to get 2/3 shades of reds on each print, to add a subtle dimension to the pattern. The texture on the cloth from the printing technique additionally added the required drama.
The patterns were drawn to suit the end use of the cloth.
Robust patterns with a tough base fabric for the home department.
Flowing floral patterns on a light weight Mal and calico for the clothing department.
